Buying or selling a mill deep in the country

Perhaps the ultimate exceptional home, former mills are now rising reborn from their proverbial ashes. Historic former watermills and windmills offer enormous potential.

Windmill, watermill or oil mill ?

One watermill with 360 m2 of living space on 4 floors, or another that has a river running through it and boasts a huge cathedral-like living room with an enormous fireplace. A mill for restoration complete with original millstones and wooden staircase… It’s hard to resist the charm of these 17th and 18th century buildings that can be found all over France. Although watermills are commonplace almost everywhere in the country, windmills are inevitably found located closer to the French coast or in windy regions like Provence with its Mistral and the Western Mediterranean with its prevailing northerly winds known as Tramontane. But if you want an oil mill, your search must focus on the Var, Lubéron and Alpes-Maritimes. You’ll find them in the sunniest spots surrounded by century-old trees.

A mill for renovation

A unique property that blends the cachet of period charm with modern comforts. Some of the older, more dilapidated, mills definitely need to be surveyed and inspected by construction professionals. But renovated under the supervision of an architect, the mill could feature a Trombe wall to capture the heat of the sun, a fully renovated bioclimatic outbuilding or perhaps a metal bridge to a mezzanine level. Their innate architecture has made many mills wonderful family homes. The wing of the mill can be divided into a series of volumes and different levels to create as many rooms as desired.

And given their essential rural identity, mills are sometimes extended with outbuildings – stables, for example – which can also be redesigned and repurposed to meet your aspirations and needs!
