Pining for a timber house

It’s important to remember that timber is not reserved purely for mountain chalets. From contemporary Scandi-inspired homes to the most traditional cottages, timber houses are becoming increasingly sought after.

More and more new timber homes are now being built in France. A national survey of timber homes conducted by the Observatoire Economique de France Bois Forêt* and published in June 2019 reports a year-on-year increase in timber home construction of 49% in multiple developments, and 20% in individual home developments. So timber construction, an ancient, safe and sustainable building method, is attracting more and more households whose dream is to live in a cosy, healthy and eco-friendly home.

But which type of timber house ?

There are a number of different timber construction techniques, but timber framing is undoubtedly the most popular, followed by post-and-beam and solid wood panel homes.
In addition to its aesthetic, this type of home offers a number of other advantages: the timber framework enables walls to be doubly insulated inside and out to completely eliminate thermal bridging. Timber also has twice the insulating value of concrete blocks and is also cheaper. And it’s important to remember that timber is also a renewable material.

A luxury home

Contrary to popular belief, timber buildings are not limited to chalets in mountain pastures. Inspired by Scandi-style design, they create soft forms inspired by nature and are inherently spacious and bright. Inspired by beach or oyster huts, they can make it feel like every day is a holiday! Whether on a single level or extended upwards by one storey, some boast a roof terrace, while others are roofed in profile steel. These are healthy homes at ease with the natural environment.
